What Render's free tier actually gives you
Render publishes a free plan, and it is genuinely free, but it is shaped for evaluation rather than for keeping something online. A free web service spins down after 15 minutes without inbound traffic and takes about a minute to come back, each workspace gets 750 free instance hours per calendar month, there is no persistent disk and no shell access, and a free Render Postgres database expires 30 days after it is created. So the honest comparison is not “free versus €2.50” — it is “sleeps, has no disk and expires” versus “always on, keeps its data.”
The open-source route: run the PaaS yourself
If “open source” is the requirement rather than “free”, the answer is a self-hosted PaaS on your own server. Coolify, Dokku and CapRover all deploy Docker apps from Git or an image on a machine you rent, and all three are open source and free of licence cost. What you pay instead is the server and the operations: you own the host OS, the upgrades, the TLS renewals, the database backups and the 3am restart. On a €5–6/month Hetzner box that is a good trade if you enjoy that work or run many apps on one machine. It is a bad trade if you wanted to stop maintaining servers, which is usually why people leave Render in the first place.
