US company

Legal jurisdiction

DigitalOcean is US-owned, so EU-region data can still be reached under the US CLOUD Act. Hostim is a German company on German hardware.

Full cloud around the app

Where DigitalOcean wins

Droplets, Spaces object storage, load balancers, a managed Kubernetes service and a global region list. Hostim is one region and no object storage.

I don’t think anyone’s being evil here. The incentive just points at a bigger bill, not a flat one.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hostim a DigitalOcean App Platform alternative?

Yes. Hostim runs Docker and Git apps in Germany with managed PostgreSQL, MySQL and Redis. DigitalOcean App Platform regions are mostly US/Asia — Hostim is EU-only.

How does Hostim compare on pricing?

Hostim apps start at €2.50/month with free database tiers included. DigitalOcean App Platform basic plans start at $5/month per service and managed Postgres starts at $15/month, so a typical stack is more expensive on DO.

Can I deploy a Docker Compose stack on Hostim?

Yes. Hostim parses a Compose file and creates the services, volumes and managed databases. DO App Platform does not accept Compose — each component is added one by one.

Does Hostim support managed databases?

Yes. PostgreSQL, MySQL and Redis are managed services with automated backups, attached to your project namespace.

Where does Hostim host workloads?

On bare-metal servers in Germany (Falkenstein). Hostim does not use AWS, GCP, Azure or DigitalOcean infrastructure.
